By Emily O’Connell AVONHEAD RESIDENTS are shocked they weren’t consulted over ANZ’s plans to close their lcoal branch. The branch at the Avonhead Shopping Centre will merge with the ANZ Upper Riccarton branch on Friday. Avonhead Community Group chairman Professor Somnath Sarkar Bagchi said he is “shocked and disappointed” . He wanted ANZ to consult with the community before making the decision. He says it is probably too late now. Prof Bagchi said the community will struggle without the bank. “It was very handy especially for the elderly people... It was our understanding that it was going well and it was quite a popular bank here,” Prof Bagchi said. ANZ spokeswoman Emma Mellow said the closure was due to a decrease in customer numbers. “With more than a 25 per cent decrease over the past three years, and with ANZ Upper Riccarton just 4km away, it’s logical to combine them,” she said. That’s good news for people in Upper Riccarton but not so good for the people who use the Avonhead branch. The figures supplied by ANZ over bank use paint a gloomy picture – and we can blame it all on the internet. The closure comes as Westpac considers closing their New Brighton, Sydenham and Lincoln branches. Parking saga rolls on By Emily O’Connell AN ILAM resident is frustrated after public consultation on restrictions to help solve Canterbury University parking issues has been delayed. Yesterday the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board received an updated report with solutions to the parking problems. The board has been working with the Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board to create solutions for the streets - which are popular parking spots for Canterbury University students and staff. But Ilam and Upper Riccarton Residents’ Association chairman Phil McGoldrick said the community boards need to consider placing restrictions on the area close to Canterbury University urgently. City council manager planning and delivery transport Lynette Ellis was unable to say how long the delay will be. “Staff are meeting with the community boards in the new year to consider what areas or specific streets will be a priority to start community engagement.

boundaries of Hamilton Ave, Ryeland Ave and Ilam Rd. A majority of 41 per cent of people didn’t support the proposal to make restrictions in Area One. During the meeting it was also decided to not present Area One to the board for approval. “The project did not receive a great amount of support from the community,” the report said. Mr McGoldrick said when Canterbury University starts back his street will be full of cars and it’s a real safety issue. He thinks Canterbury University has been “genuine” in trying their best to fix the problem. The report also said Residents Parking Permits will be considered next year after the city council’s Long Term Plan 2018. “It’s not anticipated that the Suburban Parking Policy [of which Residents Parking Permits are a part of] would be adopted until late 2018 or early 2019,” the report said. Mr McGoldrick said he will express his concerns about the delay at the residents’ association’s meeting on Thursday night.

Festive foods: Many festive foods can be harmful and toxic to cats & dogs – here are some of the major ones that pop up every year at Christmas time!
Grapes and Raisins - Some types of grapes and raisins have been shown to cause kidney failure in dogs when eaten in toxic quantities. So think before offering your pet some tasty Christmas cake or yummy ‘treats’ off the fruit platers. Onions - Pieces of raw onion, onion powder, or even cooked onion can cause damage to red blood cells, which could result in hemolytic anemia. Garlic - fresh and powdered forms of garlic are more potent than onions. These also cause damage to red blood cells. Cats are much more sensitive as they have more fragile red blood cells. Xylitol - Xylitol is a sugar alternative that is used in many commercial ‘sugar-free’ candies, gum, and other food items. Xylitol has been shown to cause severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and liver damage in dogs and can be fatal. Xylitol keeps popping up in unexpected places – the newest one is peanut butter, so be sure to read the label carefully. Macadamia Nuts - dangerous to dogs when eaten can result in weakness, depression, vomiting, incoordination, and tremors. In most cases, dogs developed clinical signs within the first twelve hours after eating the macadamia nuts. Chocolate - Contains Theobromine and caffeine which can cause increased heart rate, tremors, and excitation, depending on the type and the quantity ingested potentially death when ingested at a toxic dose. Other effects seen with chocolate overdose are vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, increased urination, and lethargy. Dark chocolate is the most serious as it contains the most theobromine, then milk chocolate, while white chocolate doesn’t contain any, but still not healthy for your dog to have.

Chewing electrical cables can cause electric shock or burns to the mouth. • Be careful if you are using tinsel on your tree. If eaten, the tinsel can block your pets intestines – we saw several of these last Christmas!

Russley’s Andrew Moore also received a Local Hero medal for his work in the community. He has been a volunteer at Orana Park for 23 years and helps Kirkwood Intermediate School and Middleton Grange School pupils with reading and
writing. Mr Moore also helps out at the Canterbury Community Sailing Trust, The Spirit of Adventure Trust and he’s part of a church choir. Following the earthquakes, Mr Moore helped evacuate some of the musical instruments which were trapped in churches. MR MOORE said his volunteer roles have given him “something to get out of bed for.”

By Emily O’Connell THE ROTARY Club of Avonhead handed over a $25,000 cheque to The Rose Centre for Stroke Recovery and Research last week. About 120 players teed off in November during the club’s annual match at McLeans Island Golf Club to raise money for the centre. Although the centre is a Canterbury University entity, it largely relies on private donations. The money will go towards medical equipment, like precision scales for further testing. The centre’s deputy director Phoebe Macrae said the Rotary Club of Avonhead has been hugely supportive of their foundation since it opened. She said they are very grateful for the money as it lets them be more specific with what they do. The club will also be donating any funds raised from next year’s golf match to the Rose Centre.

Tenders close for Halswell skate parks By Emily O’Connell THE TWO proposed Halswell skate parks are one step closer with the deadline for tender applications closing yesterday. After three years of planning, the Halswell Domain and Knights Stream skate parks are expected to be ready by late April, instead of January as initially planned. City council head of parks Brent Smith said after the resource consents were lodged, the skate parks went out for tender on November 16. The consent process took longer than expected and, as a result, construction of both parks has been delayed.
Halswell Residents Association secretary David Hawke said the skate parks are fantastic and they will have a good impact on the community. “If you look at one of the things the Halswell Hub is doing, it’s got a different type of outreach I suppose, for young people in our community and the skate parks fit into that bigger picture,” he said. Mr Hawke said parents are currently having to drive their children to Prebbleton to skate. “You see people doing what they’re not supposed to be doing, which is sort of bounce their scooters and skateboards about in the supermarket carparks

of knowing that there is always someone on hand that encouraged her to move in. “I made up my mind to come after my fall. Nobody forced me here.” Cath, who moved into the village in 2016, loves her room with a door to the courtyard with the garden. For her the hardest part was giving up the house that she and her husband had built in 1956. “That was really hard, but it’s lovely here. The staff are really good and friendly.” The village also provides support for all stages people go through as they age. From independent townhouses, serviced apartments, for those that need a bit of extra household help, through to the care centre. The care centre offers the very best of resthome, hospital and
dementia care. All the rooms are private and have their own ensuite. Ryman also offers respite care from three days to 10 weeks, so if you are the carer for someone in your family and you need a break or are going on holiday – the staff will look after your loved one at the village. Sharon recalls two elderly Chinese visitors who were too ill to travel back to China, and they came to recuperate at the village. For Sharon, however, the most important thing is to make sure that the residents are happy and as healthy as they can be. “This is their home, and we treat it as such.”

Library users step up the fight By Emily O’Connell A CROWD of 30 people gathered at the Rannerdale Veterans Village to have their say on the Upper Riccarton War Memorial Library’s future. The library’s chairwoman Aynslie Walter said the building was undergoing a feasibility study when it was discovered one part of the floor had sunk into the foundation causing cracks in the kitchen, toilet and walls. The city council closed the library in late October. City council head of building consenting Robert Wright said the library will reopen subject to the required repairs being undertaken. “The building needs to be compliant to the appropriate standard so it may be safely enjoyed by groups in the future,” he said. Mrs Walter said the public has missed the library and they made suggestions for the building to be expanded. “We wish to get library services in production as soon as we can find a temporary home while the trustees discuss the

district who gave their lives in World War 1. It was the first of seven war memorial libraries built in New Zealand. John Edward Hanson gifted the site to Lady Bowen in an exchange for her less valuable site of the old library – which was described as decrepit. Mrs Walter said the library is

Hornby students amazing app By Emily O’Connell THREE HORNBY High School students have won a national competition with an application they made to help alzheimer’s sufferers. Year 10 students Kimberley MacKinnon, Fleur JohnsonDunn, and Zoe Evans recently took out the 2017 TechHub Creativity in Science and Technology Challenge in Wellington. Together they won the regional and national competition, receiving $1500 in prize money. Hornby High School digital technology teacher Ben Carter said the application was inspired by a student’s family member. “It was something that was very close to the students,” he said. Mr Carter said they were blown away by the win. “The students felt they had accomplished something truly amazing and it helped inspire a profession within the industry,” he said. The regional winners from

regional awards. The Hornby High students were then declared as the nationals winners in front of a crowd of more than 1000 people. Mr Carter said the application acts as a hub for alzheimer’s sufferers. “Users are able to set up a profile with contact details for

on the application before marketing it. “The competition is only open to year 9’s and 10’s so they will not be able to participate again, however, they will mentor the next competitors from Hornby High School,” he said.

All 140 pupils, from new entrants through to the year 8 students, were involved in the market. “We believe that every child

has something worthwhile to offer. One of the children in our school is blind, he was able to contribute by brailing labels for bookmarks,” assistant principal Lyn Satherley said. Miss Satherley said each class decided on a reward they would like to have at the end of the school term with the money they raised. She said classes then began thinking about, and researching products or services they could sell or offer at the school market. “Having a market offers an authentic purpose for hands on learning, across the curriculum; science, maths, literacy, health, the arts and in the key compe-
tencies,” miss Satherley said. Sweets, bookmarks, secondhand items, stress balls, games, cards and sausages all went up for sale. The school also had a cafe, face painting station, hair colour station, traditional games, and a water balloon throw. “Having all of the children involved in the market allows them to take ownership over their learning and working as a team,” miss Satherley said. She said any additional profit from the market will go towards a community day at the end of the term. St Bernadette’s hold a market day every second year.

Summer scarfie Year 11 Marian College student Keely Stuart (Te Aitanga-A-Mahaki) has received a Ngā Mahi-a-Ringa Pūtaiao Scholarship from Otago University. Keely will be participating in a week-long Hands-on at Otago programme during the summer holidays to experience being a science student on campus. Keely says she is very excited to be accepted onto the fully-funded programme. ‘I’m interested in a career in health, science and physiology so it will be a great opportunity to see what Otago University is like,’ she says.

News Broomfield gets a good sweeping Local News Now
By Emily O’Connell FIFTY-FIVE volunteers joined forces to clean the streets of Broomfield. World Mission Society Church of God church members and neighbours cleaned the streets about Vanguard Drive and Buchanans Rd, near the Broomfield Common Reserve. The Church of God is carrying out this ‘Mother’s Street Movement’, in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Finland, Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay, India, South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana, Mongolia and Cambodia. The aim is to motivate people to clean 40,000km across the earth with the heart of a mother who regards her neighbors as a family, and to make love and happiness through the streets of the world. A church official said “if mothers cleaned the streets, how clean the streets would be” and “if mothers are there, how bright all the streets would be,” he said. “By starting to clean the messy streets, the dark streets will be lit up brightly when tidied up neatly.”

College student, Keanu Mihaka, who participated in volunteer activities with his friends said “the more I participate in these cleanup events, the happier I feel.” Church of God members have been steadily carrying out environmental clean-up activities in various parts of the country, and have been devoted to their neighbors and society through various volunteer activities such as blood donation campaigns and disaster relief activities. “We will continue to spread hope and happiness through good conduct, with the love of our mother centering around 6,000 local churches established around the world,” an official of the Church of God said.

CHRISTMAS HAM ON THE BONE GLAZED WITH PINEAPPLE Ingredients 4kg ham on the bone 1 cup canned crushed pineapple, drained 1 cup brown sugar, tightly packed 1 tsp ground ginger Directions Preheat the oven to 180 deg C. Run a knife around the shank end of the ham. Carefully slice under the edge of the rind at the base of the ham. Use your fingers to ease between the rind and the fat. Pull to gently remove the rind. With a sharp knife, score
the fat with 3mm-deep cuts in a diamond pattern. Place ham in a foil-lined oven pan large enough to catch any glaze that drips as it cooks. Surround ham with one cup cold water. Drain pineapple and combine with glaze ingredients in a bowl. Smear glaze over scored fat of ham. Bake ham for 40-45min, basting at regular intervals until the glaze has caramelised to a golden brown. Rest the baked ham for at least 15min before carving. Sliced ham can either be served hot or at room temperature. ROSE PETAL MERINGUE WITH SUMMER BERRIES AND STRAWBERRY SAUCE Ingredients

Preheat the oven to 200 deg C and line a flat baking sheet with non-stick baking paper. Using an electric beater, whip the egg whites until firm, then whisk in the sugar. Fold in the cornflour and rose petals and place large spoonfuls of the mixture onto the baking sheet. Bake for 4045min.

Creative wrapping adds intrigue to gifts Most of the malls offer a free gift-wrapping service, which is a great help at this busy time, but for those who prefer to wrap their own here are a few ideas to make gifts look unique and exciting.
Using newspaper or cardboard boxes as wrapping is another recycling idea, and you could add a festive look by tying them with Christmas ribbon. For long-shaped gifts, why not wrap them to look like a Christmas cracker. Place a tube of cardboard around the item, then put it inside a sheet of wrapping paper, secure it with tape then scrunch up the ends like a cracker and tie them off with coloured ribbon. Kitchen foil is another wrapping option. Being silver and shiny it already has a festive look, which you could enhance with bright-coloured ribbon. Make a container, such as a jar, tin or tray one part of the gift. Complete it with chocolates, nuts or biscuits and wrap the gift in clear cellophane tied with brightcoloured ribbon.

FRESH: Tomato plants ready to leave Rolleston.
Rolleston Prison donates tomato plants to social housing tenants MORE than 5000 tomato plants have been handed over to the Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust to be donated to city housing tenants. The plants are an annual project at Rolleston Prison and are grown from seed to plant ready for home gardens. The plants take eight to ten weeks from planting and germination until they are ready to be collected. “This project gives prisoners an opportunity to give something back
and provides people in the community with the means to grow healthy food for themselves and their family,” said Rolleston Prison director Mike Howson. “Many of the prisoners know what it is like to struggle financially and they enjoy the opportunity to do something for the community, especially near to Christmas. Seeing the plants leave the prison for a person’s garden means a great deal to the men involved,” he said.
More than 40,000 tomato plants have been cultivated and donated since the Tomatoes for Tenants Project began in 2008 and the annual delivery of the tomatoes is highly anticipated by the city housing tenants. Rick Fraser of Ōtautahi said the trust values the partnership with Rolleston Prison and many tenants appreciate the plants and save a space in their gardens for them. Leftover plants are gifted to schools and community groups.

Make sure you have a ‘safe zone’ around your property Clear vegetation close to your home. This could fuel a fire if one started. Choose plants with low flammability – native plants are often better. Keep your lawns mowed and green. Don’t store firewood close to the house. Clear your gutters of dry leaves. Be careful when using any mechanical equipment in dry conditions.
