By Emily O’Connell AVONHEAD RESIDENTS are shocked they weren’t consulted over ANZ’s plans to close their lcoal branch. The branch at the Avonhead Shopping Centre will merge with the ANZ Upper Riccarton branch on Friday. Avonhead Community Group chairman Professor Somnath Sarkar Bagchi said he is “shocked and disappointed” . He wanted ANZ to consult with the community before making the decision. He says it is probably too late now. Prof Bagchi said the community will struggle without the bank. “It was very handy especially for the elderly people... It was our understanding that it was going well and it was quite a popular bank here,” Prof Bagchi said. ANZ spokeswoman Emma Mellow said the closure was due to a decrease in customer numbers. “With more than a 25 per cent decrease over the past three years, and with ANZ Upper Riccarton just 4km away, it’s logical to combine them,” she said. Prof Bagchi says it was a moneymaking move. •Turn to page 6

Chrys Horn’s view on Ngai Puna Wai

YOU KIND of get the feeling there’s an avalanche of suburban bank closures on the way. We reveal today ANZ (page 1) is closing its Avonhead branch and moving the people who work there to an expanded Upper Riccarton branch. That’s good news for people in Upper Riccarton but not so good for the people who use the Avonhead branch. The figures supplied by ANZ over bank use paint a gloomy picture – and we can blame it all on the internet. The closure comes as Westpac considers closing their New Brighton, Sydenham and Lincoln branches. Congratulations to Christine Lake (page 1) for her Local Hero medal last week as part of Kiwibank’s New Zealander of the Year Awards. Barry Clarke

Parking saga rolls on By Emily O’Connell AN ILAM resident is frustrated after public consultation on restrictions to help solve Canterbury University parking issues has been delayed. Yesterday the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board received an updated report with solutions to the parking problems. The board has been working with the Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board to create solutions for the streets - which are popular parking spots for Canterbury University students and staff. But Ilam and Upper Riccarton Residents’ Association chairman Phil McGoldrick said the community boards need to consider placing restrictions on the area close to Canterbury University urgently. City council manager planning and delivery transport Lynette Ellis was unable to say how long the delay will be. “Staff are meeting with the community boards in the new year to consider what areas or specific streets will be a priority to start community engagement.

FRUSTRATED: Ilam and Upper Riccarton Residents’ Association chairman Phil McGoldrick wants to see parking restrictions for the area about Canterbury University reviewed urgently. This follows a decision to delay the process.

Unfortunately, staff cannot comment on likely timeframes at this stage,” she said. Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board chairman Mike Mora said the reason for the delay was because they want to get Canterbury University involved in the process too. But the report highlighted the cost of public consultation. “Given the cost of the consul-

The affected area, which runs from Straven to Avonhead Rds, is being reviewed in five parts. One-hundred-and-forty-seven submissions were made during the consultation period for Area One. boundaries of Hamilton Ave, Ryeland Ave and Ilam Rd. A majority of 41 per cent of people didn’t support the proposal to make restrictions in Area One. During the meeting it was also decided to not present Area One to the board for approval. “The project did not receive a great amount of support from the community,” the report said. Mr McGoldrick said when Canterbury University starts back his street will be full of cars and it’s a real safety issue. He thinks Canterbury University has been “genuine” in trying their best to fix the problem. The report also said Residents Parking Permits will be considered next year after the city council’s Long Term Plan 2018. “It’s not anticipated that the Suburban Parking Policy [of which Residents Parking Permits are a part of] would be adopted until late 2018 or early 2019,” the report said. Mr McGoldrick said he will express his concerns about the delay at the residents’ association’s meeting on Thursday night.

In Brief BUS STOP SHELTERS The Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board will discuss tonight whether to approve the installation of eight bus passenger shelters. The proposed locations are Corsair Drive, 59 Waimairi Rd, 58 Patterson Tce, 78 Springs Rd, Caulfield Ave, Awatea Rd, 13 Springs Rd and 51 Main South Rd. The city council staff recommendation is to approve the proposed bus shelters. . . . AND BUS STOPS The community board will also decide whether to approve a new bus stop on Rotherham St outside Westfield Riccarton. Hassle Free Tours is requesting the stop for their doubledecker bus route. The city council staff recommendations are all to approve the proposed bus stop. Christmas tips to keep your pets safe over the festive season ‘Tis the season to be jolly! In the spirit of the coming festive season the staff at McMaster and Heap Veterinary Practice wish to give you some helpful tips on how to keep your pets safe and happy over this busy time.

AWARD: Plunket president Christine Lake,of Ilam, receiving her Local Hero award from Mayor Lianne Dalziel and Kiwibank chief executive officer Mark Stephen. PHOTO: AARON CAMPBELL

Festive foods: Many festive foods can be harmful and toxic to cats & dogs – here are some of the major ones that pop up every year at Christmas time!

Grapes and Raisins - Some types of grapes and raisins have been shown to cause kidney failure in dogs when eaten in toxic quantities. So think before offering your pet some tasty Christmas cake or yummy ‘treats’ off the fruit platers. Onions - Pieces of raw onion, onion powder, or even cooked onion can cause damage to red blood cells, which could result in hemolytic anemia. Garlic - fresh and powdered forms of garlic are more potent than onions. These also cause damage to red blood cells. Cats are much more sensitive as they have more fragile red blood cells. Xylitol - Xylitol is a sugar alternative that is used in many commercial ‘sugar-free’ candies, gum, and other food items. Xylitol has been shown to cause severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and liver damage in dogs and can be fatal. Xylitol keeps popping up in unexpected places – the newest one is peanut butter, so be sure to read the label carefully. Macadamia Nuts - dangerous to dogs when eaten can result in weakness, depression, vomiting, incoordination, and tremors. In most cases, dogs developed clinical signs within the first twelve hours after eating the macadamia nuts. Chocolate - Contains Theobromine and caffeine which can cause increased heart rate, tremors, and excitation, depending on the type and the quantity ingested potentially death when ingested at a toxic dose. Other effects seen with chocolate overdose are vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, increased urination, and lethargy. Dark chocolate is the most serious as it contains the most theobromine, then milk chocolate, while white chocolate doesn’t contain any, but still not healthy for your dog to have.

Christmas Decorations Christmas decorations are not for pets to play with. • Keep your pet away from plants, many of which are poisonous, especially lilies which are extremely toxic for cats and results in acute kidney failure. • Keep electrical wires and batteries out of your pets reach. Chewing electrical cables can cause electric shock or burns to the mouth. • Be careful if you are using tinsel on your tree. If eaten, the tinsel can block your pets intestines – we saw several of these last Christmas!

•From page 1 She credited her hard work to the support she receives from her family. “With the voluntary roles, I couldn’t do it without the support from my family who give me the time away and things like that,” Mrs Lake said. Mayor Lianne Dalziel presented the medals to this year’s winners. She commended the recipients for their achieve-

ments in the community. “The positive difference they have made to the lives of others cannot be overstated,” Ms Dalziel said. Russley’s Andrew Moore also received a Local Hero medal for his work in the community. He has been a volunteer at Orana Park for 23 years and helps Kirkwood Intermediate School and Middleton Grange School pupils with reading and

writing. Mr Moore also helps out at the Canterbury Community Sailing Trust, The Spirit of Adventure Trust and he’s part of a church choir. Following the earthquakes, Mr Moore helped evacuate some of the musical instruments which were trapped in churches. MR MOORE said his volunteer roles have given him “something to get out of bed for.”

LAwyERS We have over 40 years’ experience to assist you with…

Don’t forget about your RABBITS Flystrike is a serious condition in rabbits. It occurs mostly in the summer months and we see a lot of cases over the holiday season as people get really busy and forget to regularly check on their pets. Flystrike is extremely distressing and it is also potentially fatal. It is caused by flies that are attracted to damp fur, urine, faeces and the odour of the rabbit’s scent. The flies will land on the rabbit normally around the rabbits rear end and lay their eggs. Within a very short time of 2 hours the eggs will hatch into maggots which start to feed on the rabbits skin. This process happens very quickly and is not always caught in time. Check your rabbit twice a day and if you find a maggot on your rabbit take it to us immediately.

Cooked bones – These easily splinter and the bone shards can cause choking or get stuck in your dog’s gums or stomach resulting in emergency surgery. Discourage your dog from foraging in your bins and try to secure all of the lids.

By Emily O’Connell THE ROTARY Club of Avonhead handed over a $25,000 cheque to The Rose Centre for Stroke Recovery and Research last week. About 120 players teed off in November during the club’s annual match at McLeans Island Golf Club to raise money for the centre. Although the centre is a Canterbury University entity, it largely relies on private donations. The money will go towards medical equipment, like precision scales for further testing. The centre’s deputy director Phoebe Macrae said the Rotary Club of Avonhead has been hugely supportive of their foundation since it opened. She said they are very grateful for the money as it lets them be more specific with what they do. The club will also be donating any funds raised from next year’s golf match to the Rose Centre.

Great sports opportunities – both formal and informal and more spaces which can be used by our community are two things that we can expect as Nga Puna Wai develops. Halswell is already a great place for those interested in sport and the developments in Nga Puna Wai will add in athletics, tennis and hockey to the opportunities that already exist in the area. The addition of a pavilion with café and bar facilities is also a bonus for those who will use the site for. We understand also that the pavilion will have space available for the community to hire for their own events. For Halswell people there will also be great walking and cycling opportunities as well as community sports fields that

ANZ to shut Avonhead branch •From page 1 Prof Bagchi says it was a money-making move. “If you look at the profit level every year it’s going up, up and up but still from a clients’ point of view, they’re trying to minimise all their facilities,” he said. Ms Mellow said the average

ANZ customer uses mobile banking one to two times a day and visits a branch only two times a year. Prof Bagchi said some customers wouldn’t even know how to use a computer. Similarly, Westpac says internet and mobile phone banking, and

changing populations because of the earthquakes, is the reason for its planned closures. ANZ Upper Riccarton is undergoing $700,000 of refurbishments. “This includes a SmartATM, more client interview rooms and the ability for more of our

teams to work under one roof, including specialists in wealth, insurance, migrant banking and commercial and agri,” Ms Mellow said. All ANZ Avonhead Shopping Centre staff will be transferred to the ANZ Riccarton branch. ANZ also closed their Pahiatua

on Friday. “Like all businesses we’re always looking at our network and where our customers most need us,” Ms Mellow said. The closure comes as Westpac considers closing their New Brighton, Sydenham and Lincoln branches.

Tenders close for Halswell skate parks By Emily O’Connell THE TWO proposed Halswell skate parks are one step closer with the deadline for tender applications closing yesterday. After three years of planning, the Halswell Domain and Knights Stream skate parks are expected to be ready by late April, instead of January as initially planned. City council head of parks Brent Smith said after the resource consents were lodged, the skate parks went out for tender on November 16. The consent process took longer than expected and, as a result, construction of both parks has been delayed.

Halswell Residents Association secretary David Hawke said the skate parks are fantastic and they will have a good impact on the community. “If you look at one of the things the Halswell Hub is doing, it’s got a different type of outreach I suppose, for young people in our community and the skate parks fit into that bigger picture,” he said. Mr Hawke said parents are currently having to drive their children to Prebbleton to skate. “You see people doing what they’re not supposed to be doing, which is sort of bounce their scooters and skateboards about in the supermarket carparks

Early birthday present for retirement village

Village manager Sharon Armstrong and resthome resident Cath Gillespie. needed to see management. “Diana and I made sure that we recruited the right people for the role. It was also important that one member of the upper management team is always available to them. If the staff want to see you, they want to see you for a reason.” The audit also included looking at infections, human resources, and the food served at the village. Sharon said it was great hearing the feedback and knowing what the residents thought and also that technology has helped improve systems already in place. Technology like the myRyman care app has not only improved the medical aspect of caring for the elderly but it has also given a very personal touch to each and

every resident’s care. Everyone has access to the rst-class care at the village and the care centre is available to anyone and everyone where there are beds available now. For Sharon and her team, making sure the family of residents feel secure is just as important as looking after the residents. “The rst thing most notice and comment on is the atmosphere and feel of the village.” Most visitors comment on the friendliness of the staff, the vibrancy of their uniforms and the range of activities the village provides. The staff work hard to make sure that the village is a home for the residents and not just a care facility. For resthome resident Cath Gillespie, 93, it’s the security

of knowing that there is always someone on hand that encouraged her to move in. “I made up my mind to come after my fall. Nobody forced me here.” Cath, who moved into the village in 2016, loves her room with a door to the courtyard with the garden. For her the hardest part was giving up the house that she and her husband had built in 1956. “That was really hard, but it’s lovely here. The staff are really good and friendly.” The village also provides support for all stages people go through as they age. From independent townhouses, serviced apartments, for those that need a bit of extra household help, through to the care centre. The care centre offers the very best of resthome, hospital and

dementia care. All the rooms are private and have their own ensuite. Ryman also offers respite care from three days to 10 weeks, so if you are the carer for someone in your family and you need a break or are going on holiday – the staff will look after your loved one at the village. There is also convalescence care, where someone has been discharged from hospital but it might be too soon to send them home on their own. Sharon recalls two elderly Chinese visitors who were too ill to travel back to China, and they came to recuperate at the village. For Sharon, however, the most important thing is to make sure that the residents are happy and as healthy as they can be. “This is their home, and we treat it as such.”

NESTLED near the Port Hills, Ryman Healthcare’s Anthony Wilding Retirement Village received some fantastic news in late November. Just in time for the village’s 10th anniversary! The village received a fouryear certication from the Ministry of Health (MOH) with continuous improvements in ve areas, which means that Anthony Wilding Retirement Village is continuing to exceed the set MOH standards in ve areas. A fantastic result that village staff and residents are really proud of. The fouryear certication means that the village will not have another audit in four years. However, near the two-year mark the next audit will be announced. Village Manager Sharon Armstrong said that she and her team will be ready. “It’s what you should be doing anyway, but it’s having the proof to show that you are succeeding.” Sharon said that her team was incredibly pleased by the result and will continue to go from strength to strength and improve wherever they can. “One of the continuous improvements that was close to my heart was staff retention and staff morale. The auditor actually stated that she’s never given one for staff morale before, which really pleased us.” Sharon, who was the assistant to the manager before stepping into the manager role, recalls the open-door policy put in place by the previous manager Diana Hanan. Sharon and her Clinical Manager, Jeannie Sales, have continued the policy. Diana, now the regional manager for the area, Sharon and Jeannie worked hard to make sure that someone is always available if the staff

Library users step up the fight By Emily O’Connell A CROWD of 30 people gathered at the Rannerdale Veterans Village to have their say on the Upper Riccarton War Memorial Library’s future. The library’s chairwoman Aynslie Walter said the building was undergoing a feasibility study when it was discovered one part of the floor had sunk into the foundation causing cracks in the kitchen, toilet and walls. The city council closed the library in late October. City council head of building consenting Robert Wright said the library will reopen subject to the required repairs being undertaken. “The building needs to be compliant to the appropriate standard so it may be safely enjoyed by groups in the future,” he said. Mrs Walter said the public has missed the library and they made suggestions for the building to be expanded. “We wish to get library services in production as soon as we can find a temporary home while the trustees discuss the

future of our building,” she said. Mrs Walter said Rannerdale has offered their building for the library’s Anzac service next year. “The next step is to sort options for the future and do some massive fundraising,” she said. The library was opened in 1919 as a memorial to those from the

district who gave their lives in World War 1. It was the first of seven war memorial libraries built in New Zealand. John Edward Hanson gifted the site to Lady Bowen in an exchange for her less valuable site of the old library – which was described as decrepit. Mrs Walter said the library is

Hornby students amazing app By Emily O’Connell THREE HORNBY High School students have won a national competition with an application they made to help alzheimer’s sufferers. Year 10 students Kimberley MacKinnon, Fleur JohnsonDunn, and Zoe Evans recently took out the 2017 TechHub Creativity in Science and Technology Challenge in Wellington. Together they won the regional and national competition, receiving $1500 in prize money. Hornby High School digital technology teacher Ben Carter said the application was inspired by a student’s family member. “It was something that was very close to the students,” he said. Mr Carter said they were blown away by the win. “The students felt they had accomplished something truly amazing and it helped inspire a profession within the industry,” he said. The regional winners from

Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch gathered at the Royal Society Te Apārangi to give presentations to judges and each other. The teams then toured Datacom and Trade Me, followed by afternoon tea at the Beehive with Labour MP Claire Curran who presented the students with their

regional awards. The Hornby High students were then declared as the nationals winners in front of a crowd of more than 1000 people. Mr Carter said the application acts as a hub for alzheimer’s sufferers. “Users are able to set up a profile with contact details for

SCHOOLS relatives, the games they want to play which are supported by scientific research to help determine games relevant to severity, an achievements board and a video chat function,” he said. Mr Carter said the students want to put the finishing touches

on the application before marketing it. “The competition is only open to year 9’s and 10’s so they will not be able to participate again, however, they will mentor the next competitors from Hornby High School,” he said.

Pupils turn hand-made goods into cold hard cash By Emily O’Connell ST BERNADETTE’S School pupils turned handmade and secondhand goods into money at their market day last Thursday. All 140 pupils, from new entrants through to the year 8 students, were involved in the market. “We believe that every child

has something worthwhile to offer. One of the children in our school is blind, he was able to contribute by brailing labels for bookmarks,” assistant principal Lyn Satherley said. Miss Satherley said each class decided on a reward they would like to have at the end of the school term with the money they raised. She said classes then began thinking about, and researching products or services they could sell or offer at the school market. “Having a market offers an authentic purpose for hands on learning, across the curriculum; science, maths, literacy, health, the arts and in the key compe-

tencies,” miss Satherley said. Sweets, bookmarks, secondhand items, stress balls, games, cards and sausages all went up for sale. The school also had a cafe, face painting station, hair colour station, traditional games, and a water balloon throw. “Having all of the children involved in the market allows them to take ownership over their learning and working as a team,” miss Satherley said. She said any additional profit from the market will go towards a community day at the end of the term. St Bernadette’s hold a market day every second year.

From the Board

Whatever we want to be...

As we go to print we are excited to hear our new Bishop, Fr Paul Martin SM, has been appointed to Christchurch. In celebrating the news, a special thank you must go to Fr Rick Loughnan for his leadership in the interim, to the Diocese for its ongoing support and we remember Bishop Barry Jones with fondness. Bishop-Elect Paul’s appointment represents an exciting new phase of growth for our Catholic community. Thank you to our Board of Trustees, college and community and members of the Marian Foundation for your work throughout 2017. To our Marian girls – relax and enjoy the well-earned break. There are some fantastic programmes, and collaborative project opportunities planned for 2018. And finally, congratulations to our 2017 Marian College leavers. The gospel values – which underpin the special character of Marian College – will guide you well into the future. We wish you all the very best and please keep in touch. Wishing you good health and blessings this Christmas. Jan Paterson Marian College Board of Trustees

Young Māori Marian College students participating in the Manukura programme are realising if they put their minds to it – they can do and be whatever they want.

Prize winners 2017 The 2017 Dux of Marian College has been awarded to Jessie Fahey and Proxime Accessit to Rebecca Lake.

The full list of senior major prize recipients and photographs are now on the Marian College website. Marian College Principal Mary-Lou Davidson says as well as reflecting the opportunities students have in a wide range of areas of the school, awards are a reflection of hard work and dedication. “Congratulations to all the students who have been acknowledged,” Mrs Davidson says.

Ultimate St John Award

The programme is a partnership between Ngāi Tūāhuriri, Te Tapuae o Rehua and seven eastern Christchurch secondary schools and aims to ensure young Māori see themselves as leaders of the future. Participating student Rawinia Tahi (Ngāti Maniapoto) says she has learnt a lot.

‘Recognising my gifts and understanding how I can use them to help others, was the biggest realisation for me,’ Rawinia says.

Summer scarfie Year 11 Marian College student Keely Stuart (Te Aitanga-A-Mahaki) has received a Ngā Mahi-a-Ringa Pūtaiao Scholarship from Otago University. Keely will be participating in a week-long Hands-on at Otago programme during the summer holidays to experience being a science student on campus. Keely says she is very excited to be accepted onto the fully-funded programme. ‘I’m interested in a career in health, science and physiology so it will be a great opportunity to see what Otago University is like,’ she says.

The Grand Prior Award is the ultimate award, other than for bravery, for St John Cadets. Georgiana was one of 90 cadets - including former Marian student Steph Wessing (left) - from around New Zealand to receive the prestigious award.

Zonta Awards

‘I love learning new leadership skills and I’m really thankful I joined St John, as otherwise I wouldn’t have considered the Navy as a career path,’ she says.

The Zonta Awards are a celebration of the highest sports achievers - leaders in their sport locally and often competitors on the world stage.

Georgiana’s plans include a gap year, travel, and a career in the Navy as a medic.

This year, three Marian College students were finalists at the Zonta Sports Awards. Renee Rae won the top award for her contribution to netball umpiring. A judge said Renee follows a long tradition of Marian students who have won the award, and there was something very special about Marian College and its tradition of service.

Ara awards excellence The opportunities and benefits of an innercity campus are many for Marian College students. From Year 11, students can choose to earn credits at Ara Institute of Canterbury, making the most of excellent facilities and teaching expertise – just across the road. Recently, three Marian students received

awards at Ara Youth Showcase. Year 12 students Holly Stanley (pictured) received Academic Excellence in the NZ Certificate in Cookery level 3, Aniesh Holland received Academic Excellence in Hospitality Supported Learning and Georgiana Vaughan-Walker received a Citizenship Award

Rebecca Lake (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Irakehu) and Millicent Smith (Ngāpuhi) were both nominated for outstanding achievement for their New Zealand representation in football and ice hockey respectively. This is the second year Rebecca has been acknowledged in the highly competed category.

News Broomfield gets a good sweeping Local News Now

By Emily O’Connell FIFTY-FIVE volunteers joined forces to clean the streets of Broomfield. World Mission Society Church of God church members and neighbours cleaned the streets about Vanguard Drive and Buchanans Rd, near the Broomfield Common Reserve. The Church of God is carrying out this ‘Mother’s Street Movement’, in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Finland, Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay, India, South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana, Mongolia and Cambodia. The aim is to motivate people to clean 40,000km across the earth with the heart of a mother who regards her neighbors as a family, and to make love and happiness through the streets of the world. A church official said “if mothers cleaned the streets, how clean the streets would be” and “if mothers are there, how bright all the streets would be,” he said. “By starting to clean the messy streets, the dark streets will be lit up brightly when tidied up neatly.”

containers, cans, cigarette butts, glass bottles, microwaves, abandoned trolleys and large tree branches. They filled about 50 rubbish bags. Michelle Hodgetts, who participated with her children, was more delighted to clean with mother’s heart. “I’m very happy to join today’s event to spread Mother’s love to our neighbours and communities because the world needs this the most,” she said. College student, Keanu Mihaka, who participated in volunteer activities with his friends said “the more I participate in these cleanup events, the happier I feel.” Church of God members have been steadily carrying out environmental clean-up activities in various parts of the country, and have been devoted to their neighbors and society through various volunteer activities such as blood donation campaigns and disaster relief activities. “We will continue to spread hope and happiness through good conduct, with the love of our mother centering around 6,000 local churches established around the world,” an official of the Church of God said.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY... CHRISTMAS HAM ON THE BONE GLAZED WITH PINEAPPLE Ingredients 4kg ham on the bone 1 cup canned crushed pineapple, drained 1 cup brown sugar, tightly packed 1 tsp ground ginger Directions Preheat the oven to 180 deg C. Run a knife around the shank end of the ham. Carefully slice under the edge of the rind at the base of the ham. Use your fingers to ease between the rind and the fat. Pull to gently remove the rind. With a sharp knife, score

the fat with 3mm-deep cuts in a diamond pattern. Place ham in a foil-lined oven pan large enough to catch any glaze that drips as it cooks. Surround ham with one cup cold water. Drain pineapple and combine with glaze ingredients in a bowl. Smear glaze over scored fat of ham. Bake ham for 40-45min, basting at regular intervals until the glaze has caramelised to a golden brown. Rest the baked ham for at least 15min before carving. Sliced ham can either be served hot or at room temperature. ROSE PETAL MERINGUE WITH SUMMER BERRIES AND STRAWBERRY SAUCE Ingredients

Creative wrapping adds intrigue to gifts Most of the malls offer a free gift-wrapping service, which is a great help at this busy time, but for those who prefer to wrap their own here are a few ideas to make gifts look unique and exciting.

Using newspaper or cardboard boxes as wrapping is another recycling idea, and you could add a festive look by tying them with Christmas ribbon. For long-shaped gifts, why not wrap them to look like a Christmas cracker. Place a tube of cardboard around the item, then put it inside a sheet of wrapping paper, secure it with tape then scrunch up the ends like a cracker and tie them off with coloured ribbon. Kitchen foil is another wrapping option. Being silver and shiny it already has a festive look, which you could enhance with bright-coloured ribbon. Make a container, such as a jar, tin or tray one part of the gift. Complete it with chocolates, nuts or biscuits and wrap the gift in clear cellophane tied with brightcoloured ribbon.

The first tip to make the job easier and the wrapping look more professional is to do the task on a flat surface – a table or a hard floor. Recycling has become an important aspect of modern-day life, and that’s easy to do with gift-wrapping. For example, those brown paper bags you have put aside are ideal, especially for odd-shaped gifts. To give them a Christmassy look, you could glue on those left-over pieces of wrapping paper from last year that are too small to use, and add a candy cane or chocolate with the gift tag. Another quirky idea is to wrap your gifts in fabric. You could cut up a garment you no longer wear, or look out those left over pieces from curtains or clothing you have made. Tie them up with fabric ribbon to complete the look.

In fact many have found it to increase fat loss by 2 to 3 times greater than normal. T.V. Dr. Oz has said it is the most effective & fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss. Even without exercise & diet changes many have found it beneficial, although even better & quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise & an improved diet. The extract of this amazing fruit is called Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made & stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help control mood & sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of strokes & cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits. It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent & digestive aid. To obtain reliable results it is important

to take a product that contains a standardized extract of 60% HCA & also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more. Further information & advice is available in store at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, Phone: 388-5757. CLINICAL STRENGTH GARCINIA CAMBOGIA

Skin Rejuvenator

Until Rachel Hunter’s popular TV series “TOUR OF BEAUTY” Dilo Oil was relatively unknown, being one of the best-kept secrets of the Pacific Islands. It may however be the number one natural beauty oil available as it possesses powerful natural skin regeneration and healing properties. According to ethnobotanist Chris Kilham, Dilo (pronounced dee-lo) Oil is a powerful skin regenerator as it is one of the most effective agents in promoting the regeneration and formation of new tissue, thereby accelerating wound healing and the growth of healthy skin. Dilo Oil is super-absorbing and can penetrate all three layers of the skin, offering exceptional cell hydration and regeneration. As well as this, Dilo Oil has potent anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant properties. Traditionally, Dilo Oil is used to keep the skin young and youthful and for just about any skin complaint. Some of the conditions for which it is considered helpful include abrasions, cuts and cracks, acne and acne scars, pimples, blemishes, stretch marks, wrinkles, blisters, burns (including chemical and radiation), diabetic sores, rashes, shaving irritation, dry or scaly skin,

eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, herpes sores (cold-sores), insect bites and stings, rheumatism, pain, sciatica, shingles, sunburn, rosacea, athlete’s foot, skin eruptions, warts, skin ulcers and sores, nappy rash and almost any other skin ailment and often with incredible results. Many beauty and skincare products on the market today contain unnatural ingredients that can be toxic and may even contribute to disease. Generally the benefits are exaggerated and often only temporary or camouflage. Marshall’s Dilo Oil is 100% pure and certified organic. It has been cold-pressed from the Dilo nut and contains absolutely no additives. Polynesians and Southeast Asians have revered Dilo Oil for centuries believing it to be a sacred gift of nature and the Gods. Dilo oil stimulates and supports the skins natural healing process through the growth of new healthy skin tissue. I personally believe it is a remarkable product and highly recommend it to everyone. A 50ml bottle is $19.90 and 100ml only $29.90. Further information is available from the Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy in New Brighton. We are Always Happy to Help!

FRESH: Tomato plants ready to leave Rolleston.

Rolleston Prison donates tomato plants to social housing tenants MORE than 5000 tomato plants have been handed over to the Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust to be donated to city housing tenants. The plants are an annual project at Rolleston Prison and are grown from seed to plant ready for home gardens. The plants take eight to ten weeks from planting and germination until they are ready to be collected. “This project gives prisoners an opportunity to give something back

and provides people in the community with the means to grow healthy food for themselves and their family,” said Rolleston Prison director Mike Howson. “Many of the prisoners know what it is like to struggle financially and they enjoy the opportunity to do something for the community, especially near to Christmas. Seeing the plants leave the prison for a person’s garden means a great deal to the men involved,” he said.

More than 40,000 tomato plants have been cultivated and donated since the Tomatoes for Tenants Project began in 2008 and the annual delivery of the tomatoes is highly anticipated by the city housing tenants. Rick Fraser of Ōtautahi said the trust values the partnership with Rolleston Prison and many tenants appreciate the plants and save a space in their gardens for them. Leftover plants are gifted to schools and community groups.

AUTOMOTIVE PROFESSIONALS

Time to check your tyres before heading away on holiday As the holidays approach and plans are made for summer road trips, now is the time to check that your tyres are in good condition, says Julie Hurst of JCM Direct, the tyre specialists in Birmingham Drive. Julie and her husband Athol own the business, with Julie running it on a dayto-day basis. Now that WOFs on later model vehicles are issued every 12 months, drivers may be unaware that their tyres are becoming worn, Julie says. “Come in and see us. We offer free tyre checks, so you can head away on holiday knowing they are roadworthy and your family is safe.” If tyres do need replacing, JCM Direct offers a wide variety of quality brands at very competitive prices. They have new tyres for everything from cars, vans and 4WDs, to caravans, ride-on mowers, wheelbarrows and trailers. As well as an excellent selection of quality second-hand tyres for most vehicles, they hold a vast selection of 4WD tyres in stock. JCM Direct also offer puncture repairs, supply and fitting of new and secondhand alloy wheels, wheel alignments, replacement factory steel rims and rim repairs.

“We also specialise in old rims from the 1930s to 1970s for people with older caravans and trailers – the modern rims won’t fit those,” Julie says. Finance is available with Q Card or Farmers Card. JCM Direct is located on the corner of Birmingham Drive and Hands Road. They are open Monday to Friday, 9.30am5pm and Saturday 9.30am-1pm. Phone 343-0099, 027 22 63 805. Is your property safe from fire?

Here’s a guide to help understand the risk in your area

During the fire season, there are some risks you need to know about to help keep you, your family and your property safe. Throughout New Zealand, there are different levels of risk, depending on where you live and what the area around you is like. As we build more and more homes in previously rural areas, the level of risk is different to properties built in a more urban setting. Make sure you check your property and are aware of your surroundings so you can be best prepared this fire season.

Make sure you have a ‘safe zone’ around your property Clear vegetation close to your home. This could fuel a fire if one started. Choose plants with low flammability – native plants are often better. Keep your lawns mowed and green. Don’t store firewood close to the house. Clear your gutters of dry leaves. Be careful when using any mechanical equipment in dry conditions. Have an escape plan and an agreed safe meeting place Go to www.escapeplanner.co.nz to make a plan to get out of your home safely and agree a safe meeting place. Practise this regularly. Think about where you will meet if you need to evacuate the area. Have an emergency evacuation kit in case you need to leave quickly. If in doubt, leave early.

Good access for firefighters - Fire trucks need a lot of space to manoeuvre. Make sure there are no overgrown trees or other obstacles that may prevent access to your property. - We can pump from water supplies such as a pond, pool or tank. - Make sure your address or RAPID number is clearly visible.

The fire risk applies to everyone, no matter where you live. For more information check, www.fireandemergency.nz

ALI HARPER CELEBRATES THE JOY OF CHRISTMAS AWARD winning entertainer - Ali Harper - is once again bringing some Christmas Joy to Canterbury. Aer her sold out Christmas Joy shows last year, Ali has put together another beautifully festive concert incorporating the Voices Co Youth Ensemble along with winner of TVNZ’s Naked Choir and founder of Voices Co, Julian Hay on piano. “I adore this time of year. Not only because I see it through the eyes of my children but because it’s a special time to reflect on the past year, the joys and the challenges. I have created a concert that will include the angelic voices of children singing which is both pure and for me what Christmas is all about.” In a career spanning 25 years, Ali has starred in numerous musicals and plays across
